Featured

Selected publications

Development and Preliminary Validation of the Enjoyment Questionnaire and the Sources of Enjoyment Questionnaire

CHI 2022 (Extended Abstracts). Two validated psychometric instruments measuring about 40 distinct sources of digital game enjoyment.

Guidance is Good: Controlled Experiment Shows the Impact of Navigational Guidance on Digital Game Enjoyment and Flow

HCI International 2022, HCI-Games. Controlled experiment isolating how navigational guidance design affects player engagement and flow state.

The Feedback Loop of Flow: Controlled Experiment Shows Task-Relevant Feedback Increases Flow

AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction 2022. Examines the process of cognition and action that lead people using interactive systems to experience flow, the psychological state of being "in the zone" while overcoming optimal challenges.

Method

Research approach

Dr. Schaffer's research spans qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods: card sorting and interviews to map the sources of player enjoyment, surveys and factor analysis to build and validate psychometric instruments, and controlled experiments isolating the impact of specific interface and feedback design choices, including progress feedback, navigational guidance, and narrative framing, on player engagement and flow. Studies are built and run with the custom Unity games his independent-study researchers develop, under active IRB oversight (CITI-certified through 2027).
